Could someone explain why my would be orange pumpkin is mostly blue/green in color, although solid as a rock.I would assume it's some sort of a disease, just not sure what really caused it.I should also note it suffered from stem stress a couple weeks ago, with a crack around half the stem but kept on growing. The color started at the stem end and worked it's way towards the middle never reaching the blossom end which stayed orange.

It's not a disease, it's a SQUASH!! Sometimes pumpkins will just turn green. Do you know the genetics of the seed you planted? Perhaps there is some squash mixed in there.

A disease.....yep, a real bad one, too! Squash-itis has risen it's ugly green head once again! Last year, it bit Kirk Mombert two weeks before the weigh-off. Ended up with the worlds largest squash! Some folk consider this disease worse than Mosaic Virus!

well, i tried to catch it this year, but apparently two of the plots have developed immunity. guess i'll have to try next year with a more virulent strain.

Well, they are all just busting your chops Gardener Steve. What really happened was that the stem stress cut off the flow of oxygen to the fruit causing it to turn blue/grey............G

Ahhh just load it on the truck and bring it to weigh off. They will inform you of your squash problem. Then next year you will look for orange.

Thanks guys for the advice (I think...just kidding). This PUMPKIN!! was hand pollinated by me from the Kuhn 681 on my Kuhn 1020 so I'm sure it's not a sq.... (can't even type the word). What ever the heck it is, it weighed 202lbs(personal best),my second year trying.

I agree, it should have been a pumpkin. Sometimes they just go green. Congratulations on your personal best!

Steve, I'm having the same problem that you did. My yellow-orange pumpkin is now turning gray-green. I decided to enter that one as a squash and my real orange one as a pumpkin.
