I have noticed a lot of "small holes" in growers fruits. What causes that? I can understand the splits, but the holes have me baffled. Are they worm holes? Thanks.

In my case, there were no bugs. The pumpkin was sitting in sand that was nice & clean, with no sign of "forced entry". The problem is similar to a dill ring; the bottom of the pumpkin tends to be concave and as it buckes inward causes a split to form on the inside of the pumpkin. If the split gets deep enough it intersects with a rib and forms a hole.
Dill rings cause holes like these all the time, but at least you notice them when they occur. Anything happening underneath won't get noticed until lifting day.

Same case here, no worms or bugs causing holes. As the pumpkin ages, it's tissue isn't as pliable as it once was. Kinda like nature's relief valve! Weather appears to be a big factor this year.
