Ok, set aside your pumpkin v. squash prejudices for a moment if you will. For a newbie, seeking only the joy of success, is it easier to grow giant squashes or pumpkins? Or is there any difference? Is one hardier than the other? Thanks! I plan to grow only two plants next year, and I am wondering if I should make one of them squash.

Patience, I planted "Showking" this year from store bought seed. One seed produced round fruit with green/yellow stripes, the other produced more oval shaped fruit that were orange/yellow and are now over 85#. I've also grown New England Blue Hubbard squash that were over 40 pounds. As for hardiness, all pumpkins and squash are about the same. Frosty this morning here, but I had covered mine with blankets, tarps and whatever else I could find. Temp dipped to just below freezing.
