...woodchucks nearly decimated young plant...vine borers hadn't renewed their timeshare this season, thank God... cucumber beetle convention was halted early...stump rotted three weeks ago...winds here today leveled one third of the patch, and hasn't let up yet...man, I love this sport !!! Anyone know if pumpkins continue to grow on vines without leaves ??? Taping around 550lbs and we're not gonna quit !!!

Consider yourself a lucky one Duff.....probably lost 80% here....old tired leaves with tertiary vines that werent burried dont last long in 45mph gusts......pumpkins look bigger without the leaves dont they?....lol.......G

...gotta hand it to ya G, you got a way of putting a positive spin on things...LOL...think I'll go measure now. The way the winds blowing, it otta hold the tape in mid air and show some nice weight gains for the day...

I just went out to look in the dark with the 45 mph wind just getting cranked up in good shape here..I counted 4 broken leaves and found 3 panels of the wind break flapping around in the dark...I dare say Gustav has left his stinking mark. as long as some big tree limb doesn't come down right across Gobaby and split her across half the yard, I say let her blow..plant looks like hell anyway..hehe

I too lost a major percentage of both plants to the wind gusts. They were clocked around 50 mph near my place. My hopes of 800 are probably just a dream for this year.

Hey, all we need is a snow storm in mid September to cap everything off! What a helpless feeling it is to sit and stare at your patch nowing there is nothing you can do to stop 50 mph wind gusts. I lost a few leaves that just had enough, a few secondaries also bowed down in submisiion. But what the hell, I will be back in the patch this evening propping up damged leaves and vines and making the most of it. Without all the leaves in the way it's much easier to walk around the interior of the plant. Only 23 more days to go till Topsfield....:)

Ilive on the ocean, with only a salt marsh as a wind break. You can guess the rest of the story !!!!!

Sounds to me like David will be planting a row or two of Poplar trees as a wind break!

You will be surprised how so many will come back and continue to work.....usually when this happens you get the benefit of the growth from 2 inches of rain...no rain at all this time...just damage !.....G

I don't want "S" anymore than you but with the way this season is going it would only seem fitting. :)
