I'm growing these Pumpkins cause I like too. I've received much info from this site and others. I greatly appreciate it. However, I can't bow down to rules dictated by a handful of canadians or whoever else feels like you have to have a certain day to weigh my pumpkin. If I feel like it's time, then it's time. I will be "Official" and a happy man! Good-bye.

Hey wait a minute! That sounded WAY too much like a farewell! Please, Pappy, reassure us!!! You are one of those who make it so much fun and so educational to come to this site (which I do at least once a day for exactly that reason)!!! I have been watching the battle rage on the Mallorn list; I hope that that storm won't trouble the placid waters of this venue! Pappy, we neeeeeeeeeeed you!

Hmmm... Maybe I missed something, but what the hay are ya talking about Pappy and how'd us Canehdians get brought into it.

My two cents on what ya wrote and from all the crap I read from hort.net

I feel I agree with the masses, and maybe this might start a war here but, If ya grow a pumpkin, it is sound and you get a couple reputable witness on a certified scale who gives a rats a#$ where or when a person weighs for an official record. I know if I had a pumpkin take the record here and it only grew say 40 days and I was certain it wouldn't make the ""weigh-off"" I'd cut it from the vine and do as above and I could care less if it was in August, the record would be mine. end of story...

I hope my comments where close to what you were talking about...

I guess some rules are needed to have a fair game. Looking at my and other European countries, nothing is officially organized, and if Randoo will send me one of his biggies, you know who´ll be the European champion...
But I agree with Pappy. You have the grower associations, why can´t you call a gauger team to index your pumpkin when time has come? Or if you break your leg on 5th, you can´t be at the weigh-off on 6th, so what. Pappy has two growing seasons in one year, so if it´s not prescribed in the regulations, you are only allowed to have one. Reminds me of corresponding with our public authorities...

I distinctly remember last year that Craig Weir had the world record of 1261.4 for a couple of days. Now did he weigh in early or did Geneva get some extra days. Seems to me that a half pound on pumpkins is who trimmed it off a day early. Anyway what I'm saying is if ya got one that big does it really matter that it was weighed at a Blessed event. Hey Brent there a vocabulary word... Weir'd...sitting pretty till someone pulls the rug out...as in... Randoo and Amy were doing fine till things got weir'd...or emmons...great tag team manuver used to describe a deflating experience....like randoo was doing fine till Amy pulled an Emmons on him... No disrespect to these great growers meant as a new grower I have seen this debate for two years and think that some people grow for the prize money and need the weigh offs and some people grow for the satisfaction and an if it a certified scale officiated by a county agent or newspaper that's the weight and if it's the record it's the record. my 2 cents...chuck

I've been biting my tongue on this all night...First,let me say this,"Me and Brian are just 2 country boys trying to have FUN"!!! Isn't that what growing ag's is about??I reliaze to some it's all about winning...If we had $1000 and 2500$ first place prizes,,then maybe it would be about winning also...But unfortunetly for us top prize is $100 here...We are already at a disadvantage to start with!! HEAT,DISEASE,,AND INSECTS!!!! I know I am anyway...I want a 500-600 lb pkin,,will I ever get it,,?I hope so,,but all this about when we weigh our fruit is non-sense..We cant compete with people in northern states cause our climate won't let us... Thats not our fault,,so we must start much eariler..I'm PROUD to have a grower like Brian to compete againest,,for if I didnt,,I'd probably quit growing..If weighing our pumpkins when we feel the time is right for us to weigh is a problem with northern growers,,I'm sorry..This started a while back,a grower from Canada started this crap!! You know who you are,,at least he should,.,,who knows,,maybe he was BOOZED up when he started it..If you dont like the way we go about OUR pkin growing,,then you know the procedure.....I speak for me,,I LOVE coming to BP,,I'm sure Brian does to,,but we dont enjoy being slammed by other growers cause we weigh our pkins early..I could care less if my accomplishment is recongized by other growers..I'd like it to be,,but have no control of what others think...Cant we all just get along and grow a BIGGUN????

I never understood this one. Somewhere along the line people confused qualifying for prize money with record weights.

The way I understand it, is that you can have a world record weight in December. Weight is weight. Provided the scale is certified accurate and an impartial official is on hand.

However, to qualify for GPC money, you must weigh off at a particular event throughout the country on a particular day.

Someone please explain to me how these two things are the same?

Keep on doing what your doing guys. If anything this quality tension is entertaining... (just trying to lighten it up a bit)

Holy smokes .....It never occured to me to worry about when to pick my pumpkin....heck, I just cross my fingers that frost keeps off it so it can get its possible biggest...and also that the local weigh offs are not too early of course (: But there is the one weighoff the first week of September and mine are very small at that time.
The largest in our nearest citys exhibition weighed a bit over 500 pounds. (weighoff last week) Our growing season is short at best. I thought I could get a head start by starting my plants in April...but they did not set fruit till August! Is there any way to get them to set earlier? I sure would love to have some seeds from the big 'uns if any one has some to spare. Mine only weighed 192 pounds last year...so you can see I need help......
have a nice day everyone, Sue

Im going to echo John on this one, and I feel like being a smartass so bear with me. People have begun to take things out of proportion. And it seems like everyone over at mallorn is trying to play peacemaker. "calm down, lets get back to growing, enuf of this already...blah blah blah..." Knock it off! This is quality entertainment! I commend both Drew and Tom Beachy for speaking up so loudly. Controversy is the spice of life. Why not slug it out and see who screams the loudest? The bottom line is "Each to their own." Too many people let these small issues bother them waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. And I think people have misconstrued Drew's statements.

This is in reponse to Jeff's comments. I don't care about the date you weigh your pumpkin as long as its at a organized event(weigh off fair etc). But to pick a pumpkin early because you think it won't last is wrong. Also I do not drink and my comments were never directed at anyone in particular. I could weigh my pumpkin tommorrow and it could be a new Canadian record, would that be fair to Al Eaton. I don't think so because are target date around here is last wek of sept first week of october. I'm sure you have your fairs early in GA so that would be your target date. I'm just saying that its not playing by the rules if you feel like weighing your pumpkin early because it won't last. As per your personal attacks against me, I will not comment on them butI will not tolerate them again and will comment the next time

Oh common you guys. This blows my mind. I adore you all, and please don't get mad at me for saying this, but Pappy started this thread because he was fed up with "too many politics"! I simply cannot believe that his obviously fed-up post is being used to perpetuate the same argument that pissed him off in the first place! I was sincere in my plea to him that he ignore it and stick with us. I can imagine, if he reviews these posts now, that his attitude will be "this is exactly what I am talking about - goodbye." I have a terrible sinking feeling.... Pappy, please don't go.

As A new grower I did not realize it was a politial game. If I would have known this a head of time I may have never tried to grow one.I live dead smack in the middle of Idaho, so were do I go for a weigh off.........I load up and drive to Oregon,Utah,Washington,or maybe Nevada. So if I'm sitting on a 2000# pkn and I can't afford to spend $1000.00 for gas and motel room, food ,ect. my pkn would not be a record. Bull......I belong to a lot of organizations from racing to construction. When the voice of the many is not heard by the ears of the few we start a new organization. I'm not in this for the money but it seems a lot of people are,and when the all mighty dollar gets involved ya always start hearing crying.Pappy has the record and for those of you who don't like it sorry.Don't penalize us becouse of the season were we live.

On another note, I posted a Message on Mallorn, BUT I respect Drew and any others for what they believe in. Just I have my own beliefs and they differ to what they believe. LOL..Certainly passes the time in a fun way....lol. I debated with Drew for about an hour the other night and had a blast doing it.Half of the fun was getting him going...(got him going real good I see...)...the other half was poking holes in his reasoning...but, I still can't comprehend the requirement of a wieghoff contest when all someone's looking for validation of a personal accomplishment>>> but I'll defend Drew's rights for his own opinion to my death...well, sort of...hee-hee.
Some people may think I'm mad at Drew because of this difference of opinion...way wrong ! Its a fun topic with opinions 180 degrees apart...a great way to help the time pass between now and the contest season. Dont take it too seriously, the pumpkin world wont collapse...after all, its not like its a pumpkin color issue or anything.....LOL.....G

So maybe you need to get straight on things before you accuse me of anything!!! I have only spoke to you once in the chat Drew,,I respect you,,but you nor anyone else will TELL me when I can weigh and when I cant..If I think my pkin wont hold up and want to weigh it,,then thats what I will do!! You say personal attacks>?? I think you have attacked me unfairly just now,,and think you owe me an apology,,not other way around..Bill Van started this a while back,,,Glenn,,you know I speak the truth here,,stick up for me...Not mad at you Drew,,,but you attacked me,,....

I'm with Patience on this one...
Pappy come back !!! !
it's is frustrating to see all the politics...
but some people are passinate about what they believe
in. which is good in my oppinion...
and in a forum like this it is easy to have perpetual
disscussions.
i can tell you that pumpkins is the draw...
politics every now and then is the price one has to pay.
but from my experience over time one can pull away from
it. sure it can be difficult but just look at the
good fun stuff and try to ingore the other... it can
be done... i'm an example... every now and then i choose
a battle to fight. (and not to get anyone going... sorry
G to each his own but that's not my idea of entertainmet. )
so once again Pappy come back... I miss yoU ! :(

I will reinterate here, what I said on the list, after much self seaching on whether I would get into this or not on this site. This site to me is the best damn thing going for my newfound passion of growing , or trying to grow big pumpkins. Yes, I am a rookie, and yes I have lots to learn, but I have read as much about this hobby as one can possibly read in a year. What makes this site special is the people., each and every one of us. This is someplace a newbie such as myself can come and be welcomed, even overwhelmed with advice, encouragement and just genuinely good people who share an interest in something many people do not understand. I've been a part of many different and diverse groups, ranging from NASCAR racing online to being an Amertuer Radio Emergency Coordinator for the state of Maine. And you know what, I got out of all of them for one reason,..too much politics and people who cannot just accept the stone cold fact that people will have different opinions about different things. Each and every one of us is entitled to those opinions an nobody has the right to take them away.

(con't)
However, what all the groups I have been a part of and cannot understand is that you can't force those opinions on another person. I have read every post to this discussion turned ugly over the past week and can see points from all sides. Being from Maine, the closest place I and others here can weigh in a pumpkin we nurture with all our soul is Topsfield. Not an outlandish drive, 3 hours, but nevertheless a haul. If I want to weigh a good one, I'll make the trip. But for those with the opportunity to grow twice in a year, or those who have to drive a day or more to get to a sanctioned weigh off, it's not that easy. If there was a sanctioned weigh off in each and every state and providence that would be one thing, but such is not the case. Should the fact that someone with the skill and knowledge who happens to live 8, 10 hours from a weigh off exclude them from the chance at a record..?
I am not one to say, being a rookie, my opinion means little. However, what I do know is that many people who enjoy the hobby, like myself, do not have alot of cash to spare to travel 2 or 3 states away to weigh off at a sanctioned event. What I also know is that we all have something special here at bigpumpkins.com. something we should not risk losing over something none of us on here can resolve. Think about what all the newcomers are thinking as they read the malee of the last week. Think back to when you were a rookie, impressionable and looking to the veterans for guidance.

LMAO

Since we all have some extra time on our hands waiting for the weigh-offs to "officially" weigh our pumpkins, this sure is entertaining...

So might as well throw another log on the fire,

1) If Pappy don't come back on this post, Us Canadians are going to have to come down there and well it ain't going to be pretty with all us grown guys begging on our knees...

Pappy when you say Canadians I would hope you can narrow it down further next time, as 99% of us growers to your north are swell people and I for one back you 150%, just because one donkey's behind said something after he put his brain in park doesn't mean the rest of us are like that...NEVER EVER group us Canadians together as I'm sure you Americans have the odd Jack a@# kicking around down there in the states. The only difference between ours and yours is by law we can't shoot them....

This hobby is about the pride, joy and self-satisfaction of growing a beast that you can feel a sense of accomplishment in. Every organization out there was founded on the premice of promotion of the sport. That is not what has been observed over the last week. Is what one of us here says or thinks going to change things...not today. All I know for sure is I would hate to lose anybody one here, due to the fact that opinions got in the way of friendship and fellowship, and drove them off. I ask everyone who has posted on this issue, or simply read the posts, to stop and think about and reflect on what they have said and heard. Is this the basis on something that is probably the most peaceful hobby one could have? I think if you reflect upon your thoughts and words, you will see that even though we all have opinions and beliefs about how things are done, it all comes down to the fact that we grow pumpkins because we enjoy the people, the learning and the friendships. Lets not risk losing a great resource, a great meetingplace and great friendships over a difference of opinions..we are all entitled to our opinions..yet so is every other person in this sport..Live, Learn, Grow..but above all, cherish the friendships you have here, regardless of our opinions.

Well, I first apologize for the double. Second what is above is but 1/3 of what I wanted to post. but I screwed it up..but the bulk of it is there..take it for what it is..cause I and many here would be deeply saddened if we lost even one soul on this site because we can't accept the fact that as humans, we have differing opinions, but thats all they are...opinions. Does it matter that much that one is deemed right at the expense of friends, both our own and those of others? We as a group are about the love of growing giant pumpkins, the sharing of information and the expanse of friendship that goes along with it...Respect one another and do your best..isn't that all that really matters..

Just think????

If every single person growing giant pumpkins agreed with every aspect of the sport including weigh-off how frigin bored we would all become...

I just re-read through every post on this topic and I must say I had a good laugh, So what if I don't agree with some people I myself have had the best first year I couldn't have even imagined, a 600lb pumpkin (estimate) I am so darn proud of myself, my fruit, my hard work, the learning and the friends.

I would like to meet each and every one of you in person if I could and say thanks for adding to this fine sport we call beer drinking, I mean pumpkin growing... even though I have probably chatted or replied to your message's while sipping a cold one...

I can't wait till weigh-off to meet my two new buds from here at smoky lake and show them how us Moose Jaw boys can really drink...(Ps you two, no child coming, she made other plans wih mom that weekend plus I could stay over till Sunday so lets weigh-em and start drinking while making plans for next year.)

Plus I can't wait till X-mas to see how many of you send me some seeds, hint...hint... (Andrew??)

If I can and got alot of seed from "Wilbour" You can bet every single one of you would get a seed from him...

Well I've written so much I'm boring my self,

Boy It took me a whole hour to read and deciper all this. Pappy I hope you don,t leave, you have alot of repect here. You have taught me alot from your postings this year. I have learned alot from everyone here, from the newbies to the heavy hitters here. Most of the people here are really sincere in what they believe here. So lets put our differicnes aside and just go out and grow a realy big one. I believe that is why most of us came here in the first place. I came here to find good quality seed to try and grow a Really Big one. I found the seed I needed to do what I wanted to do. Now i have to improve on how i prepare and grow rhar raell Big one some day. I will have something in the 200 lb. range this year, which is big thing for me. I was hoping for 300 to 400, but that will be my goal next year. I also found kind , generous people who was willing to share their seed with me, freindship, and encouragemeant to out grow them. So even if I don,t completly agree with some of the things I see here. I feel the good out weighs the bad by a million miles here . I will keep coming back here. The only regret I had this year was killing my only 455 Andrew plant . I want more of that seed!! The 220 i have is doing good. But dang i feel i could have done better with that 455. (Hint, Hint)

Hey Ernie, if everyone agreed at a weighoff I don't think it would be very boring. In the last 25+ years I've been going to weighoffs I've seen people nearly come to blows on several occassions. I wonder if the folks in the Pacific Northwest think contraversy makes for a better pumkin growing community. I've only been on the pumpkin lists for a short time but I've been able to see DEEP scars that are still opening from things that started out as a minor disagreement.
I'm sure there are others out there who know what I'm talking about........Paul

Hi Giant Veggies....I sure would love to have an extra seed if you have one. The only weighoff I feel confident enough to enter this year, (my largest pumpkin is quite small) is at a local fair. Can't wait to get my hands on a seed from a really big pumpkin. Just let me know if and when you have a seed for me. I am promised a seed from P.E.I. this fall. Am excited about getting that one also. Boy this pumpkin growing thing can sure get my attention! *grin*

Paul - You are right there is a pretty big rift up here in the PNW. I don't even know the half of it but can 'sense' that it is there.

I can see both sides of this discussion and say that both are right. Everyone is entitled to their opinon.

I'd like to ask those who are on one side or the other to put themselves in the other person's shoes - if just for a moment.

I'm sure if there was a sanctioned fair or weigh sight w/ a date, all of the growers in Ga, Tx, or AZ or whatever state you are in would modify their growing time to coincide with the weigh off date. That is if they wanted to compete w/ other growers on a level playing field.

If there isn't a site, fair, date etc, well then it would be "open season". If it is heavy enough to break the state record & weighed on a certified scale, that pumpkin should win, even if it is in December.

My 2 cents as a newbie.
Regardless - Hope Ya'll are growin' em BIG.

OK, Sorry Ya'll, I was wrong. It's hard for me to accept others opinions when I feel I am in the right. I can understand other peoples veiws now, because they are the same way. We are stubborn! Thanks to ya'll for steering me in the right direction, I feel like each and everyone of you is my family. (Thanks Bob! I hope you enjoy your truckload of wabbit cwap.) Greencastle, PA

All we're doing with these stupid little arguments is sitting by watching history repeat itself. If you have that big of a problem with the GPC or whatever group telling you you can't weigh it when you want to (which i do)then contact the GPC steering commity, and if they don't do anything about it (as usual) then screw them. I feel that Pappy really livens up this site. How bored would we be early in the season if it weren't for Pappy and Jeff's pumpkins? The last thing that should happen is having such a great guy leave because some ass hole keeps bringing up the same argument.

Damn Pappy you sure know how to screw things up....

I was all set and packed to come down there and damn near had the wife convinced then ya go and pull nice guy on us again and well cancelled my little vacation.

Na I was just bullsh$tting, but the thought had crossed my mind. Really I thought ya was pulling our leg way back when fatback was a baby then I learn ya got two season's, you and Jeff are sure two lucky growers wished I had two chances at breaking the record here in one year...

Well unlike you I have to run out right now and Blanket my Pumpkin, risk of frost tonight.

OK, I'll be a man & take some of the blame for getting the Mallorn list sizzling; I pushed my belief that if I cut mine off the vine tomorrow & it weighed 1508 lbs on a certified scale, in front of witnesses or a public venue, with nothing wrong with the fruit and willing to cut it open after weighing to prove there's no water/lead/buckshot inside, it should be an OFFICIAL World RECORD and should be duly recognized, even by the GPC & WPC (providing nobody has one bigger of course.) And if I built a heated greenhouse & grew it for another 2 months & it got bigger, it should still be OFFICIAL if weighed then, regardless of how many days old it is, even if not weighed on 10/5. So Pappy, no politics with me--I'm not a paying member of any pumpkin organization, just BP! Besides, unemployed & had to buy Warrior, nothing left for dues!

He should be shipped to antartica with 10 yards of dirt, one seed and a small shovel for next growing season...

But then again he would probably grow a biggin and make us look like idiots.

Well Pappy is back, and this thread is getting stale so I suggest we all jump on the "lets get kilrpumpkins band wagon" and post say about 65 posts to let him know how displeased we are about his choice of language. so what if he appologized and it was accepted, we got to string up some one as there is still two weeks till "official weigh-off" unless of course your Pappy or Jeff and ya just weigh'em when ever ya feel like it... THAT WAS A JOKE (ok sick joke) I don't want to get any email about pulling the cork out of the bottle yet again...

I guess this is a reminder to all of us that kids use this site. When I think of a giant pumpkin grower, I think of people that are about 40 years old, not 10. I have made the "same kind of mistake" in chat.

Since I'm chairman I nominate you treasurer so every one send Pappy the money for the new rope.

This very interesting string of messages has reminded me of a simple phrase spoken many years ago............... "can't we all just get along".

This is so "American"..........and I say that with the pride of being a Veteran..........with all the crap going on in the world, some how we have found a way to minimize it's importance, and determine that the "here and now of ME" is worthy of 67 posts (68 now).........so I find myself saying it again.......This is so American.

I don't post much, and I usually don't get involved in these scenarios, but I just had to say something about this one. Like everyone else, I have an opinion too: OK people, Big Picture Here, I Mean Come On, It's Just A Pumpkin After All. Be it 12 pounds or 1200 pounds, it's still just a pumpkin.

Not avoidence, just a break. So, if you havent figured it out the thread had gone "lighthearted"...and your bringing it down again. Case

Choctaw, OK

i got an idea....some of us are talking about a level playing field, ....so all pumpkins should be weighed at a fair, weighoff etc.....so in that sense, it isnt fair then that some growers can grow the 846 calai, get 1000 lbs (846 i think makes the grower) while others cant get a hold of it (dont have the power to get one) and try it and become a heavy hitter themselves....if you want to level the playing field, let everyone grow a 846 calai (start seeds all on the same day) and see whos on top in the end.....everyone one weighs the same day too, its only fair.
Now this is somewhat in reference with what many growers did with the 455 andrews this year....it was interesting too see who did well with it....it did well over here in WI...i think there are some credible growers here....they've never grown an 846 calai, watch out if they do!

If all of us growers can start our seeds when we want too...as i do, i will weigh my fruit whenever I want to or as i see fit as well...offcial or not.

I dont care if i make some sense or any sense in this post...just getting my point across....and adding in to reach 100 posts..lol...this should help get us there.
