My son is finally coming back home to New York in November. He has been away to school in Houston, Texas. With the Pumpkin weigh offs being in the first week of October, How can i keep my pumpkin until the first weekend of November? Should i take the seeds out of the pumpkin when i get home from the weigh off on October 5th, or should i leave them in until he comes home to see the big pumpkins i have? He has never seen a big pumpkin and wants me to save the two pumpkins i have. would love some help on this with someone who really knows what to do. Thanks PumpkinBrat

Keep it in a cool, dry and shaded or dark area, it should keep till he get's home.
I rolled a 70#er around the house all winter 2 years ago,
( the wife would tell me to do something with that danged pumpkin and I would just roll it to another room ). then the fallowing may I took the seed's out, No Problem.

PB, I cut my 400 off the vine on July 19 and have kept it in the shade off the ground except for going to a weigh-off Aug 24. I went out and checked this morning and she is still tight as a drum. The stem is long gone but I made a Captan paste and smeared it where the stem was. I don't know how the seeds are fairing though. Best of luck to you!

Also spray it with 10% bleach solution frequently. It helped me to conserve a stem split for 2 weeks while the pumpkin was still on the vine and growing, so it should work even better on the entire fruit.

Hey PBrat, last year mine got hit by frost the first week of October, only about 7 weeks old. I cut it off & left it outside & carved it 10/30, and it was still in 1 piece on Thanksgiving. The only treatment I did was rub some olive oil on it to bring out the orange & darken it up (late September thru October.) And about seeds--I washed them & used a dehydrator, checking them every few hours, and 9 out of 10 germinated. Hope this helps.
