I have noticed that on my 673 Kilbert, some of the female flowers seem to have deformed lobes inside the flower. the lobes are not bunched together like healthy flowers. they seem tall, thin, and spaced apart. Has anyone ever had this problem? Is it a defect? Would this effect pollination? Thanks for any help you can give!

i have noticed that on alot of my plants,i have a lot of odd shaped lobes,i think that is okay, pollination i dont think it will effect it,greenhorn did you now if your flower is not properly pollinated it can effect the size, the shape, and cause disease and rot problems for your pumpkin, thats why i spray with a chemical that attract bees,i still think that is the reason why there are so many aborts flowers not properly pollinated,i have been putting the male part of the flower in the hole of the female and i have not had any aborts from the ones i have done.

Hey 2XH, or anyone We have all seen perfectly shaped lobes and the ones that have there "fingers crossed" Does the external shape that we see ultimately have a determination on the shape of a pumpkin? I know people would prefer a five lobe to a four lobe etc. But a misshapened flower doesn't mean the seed pods in the pumpkin itself are distorted. I know a poorly pollenated flower ie three out of four lobe will cause the pumpkin to flatten on the none pollenated ovary but is it more likely to happen on flowers that are distorted. Would love to know what the flowers looked like on some of those perfect shaped pumpkins that we see pics of....Chuck
