My pumpkin is at about 70lbs and growing very slowly. I have it shaded with dark plastic so it gets very little light. It is currently a pale yellow color. As it becomes fully mature will it darken or do I need to unshade it at some point get it to an orange color.

Thanks,

Steve

Stevo.......raise the tarp/covering higher above your pumpkin so it only protects against the more intense sunlight at, say 10am to 2pm. This will alow light in and around your pumpkin that will allow it to "color up" to whatever color its genetically engineered to be. Be advized that they aint all orange ! Some are creamy white, some yellowish, some salmon peachy colored when done. The light just allows the color to come out and the tarp will still protect from the strong sun. You may wanna remove some leaves around the fruit that might shade it on the sides for more light access and better airflow......hows the fungus over there? Its pretty bad here in N. Massapequa with downey and powdery taking hold........G

Hey LIPumpkin,

I'm in East Meadow. Not having a problem with fungus or mildew in my little patch - just slow growth. This was my first crack at the big boys and I think I'll try a bit harder next year as far as soil prep and vine maintanence. Last year I grew a connecticut field pumpkin to about 40lbs and I was hooked. My patch is way too small to produce a competition sized pumpkin, but I should be able to push out a 200-300lber once I get the hang of it.

Thanks for the advice,

Steve

I'm a pumpkin idiot but I see genetics plays an important part in color.

my squash turned a yellowish color on bottom of the stem
side where the mornin sun hits under the tarp a bit, but it
was a deep green to start with and is definately a squash.
i gave 2 other people plants from a packet of 3 seeds.
there 2 pumpkins which are now long gone where a nice orange
and mine is green. go figure. my guess is it's all in the
genes.

You can spray it will apple juice and lemon scented ammonia, and the will make it mature to an oranger color unless it's a squash:).

Rub OLIVE OIL on your yellow pumpkin and let some light get to it. Then stand back, in one day it will be deep orange.

Is this olive oil thing for real or a joke? Just curious, doesn't hurt the pumpkin?

Jim,
The oil works like a miracle. Any vegetable oil will work but Olive is thinner and lighter and seems to penetrate better. This procedure does not hurt the pumpkin and many growers do it. Pour oil on a rag and put a coat over the entire pumpkin. Look at my last diary entry for some good orange color.
