I know this sounds extremely stupid and this has probably been posted a hundred times (although I have never seen it) is the circumference around the fat middle part of the pumpkin or is it from stem to bloosom, under the pumpkin and again to stem. It just didnt make any sense hoe some people describe.

Antonio - Circumference is the fat part around the middle from the stem to blossom. (go all the way around from s to b) Your measuring tape will be parellel to the ground.
good luck

Hello: Here is a website where you can go look up the chart and it shows you how to measure your Pumpkins. You can also order books from here but it usually takes a while to get them,, but he was giving a free tape away for every book ordered and he also signs the books if you ask him to when you order them. http://www.giantpumpkin.com/estimating.html? I went and looked at his website again and did not see where he was offering the free tape with every book anymore so maybe that offer is over. Thomas

OK, call me a dope, but after reading these replies to Tony's question, I still don't get it. When you say "parallel to the ground" does that mean that you do not go all the way around? And, if you mean that you do not go all the way around, do you go from the center of the stem to the center of the blossom, or the edge, or what? I know, I need kindergarten-level instructions. I'm not even blond either! Patience

LOL........okay, grab that tape measure, and wrap it around the pumpkin like you were putting a belt on it......as if it had a waist.....all the way around, a complete circle.....the tape should be parralell to the ground.......hows that?

Scott, do you teach elementary school? If not, you should! LOL! Well, it's almost perfect. I get the process now, but I still don't understand why you say that the tape is "parallel to the ground." I mean, it is at some points, and it is not at others, right? I mean, I guess that accross the top of the pumpkin, and accross the bottom of the pumpkin, the tape is indeed sort of parallel to the ground. But, as it wraps around the ends, it is at an angle to the ground, isn't it? That's where I keep getting thrown off. But each reply said parallel, including yours, so I am afraid that I am missing something about the process. Sorry to be tedious.... Thanks for your patience! Patience

Hey Patience, that is assuming that the stem and blossom ends are the same distance above the ground. then it would be parallel otherwise run it from the stem around the blossom back to the stem. Chuck

okay, how about this.......LOL..look at your pumpkin from the side, not at the stem, not at the blossom, not from the top down, but at either the "drivers side" or the " passenger side".....so you're squating down, and you're looking at the side of the pumpkin..with me so far? good!.......now......if you took a tape measure and ran it the length of the drivers side....the tape will be going left to right, .....so if the "1" was at the blossom end, in your right hand.....the "36" will be at the stem in your left hand......like you're spreading out your arms like your a bird? still with me?..... the tape will run horizontally accross the side of the fruit.......THIS is what is meant by the tape is parrallel to the ground, ALL the way around the fruit. hows that?

Omigod! I'm such a bonehead! I get it now!!!!! The thing does NOT go under the pumpkin at all, right? It's like a pin stripe? Duh. I should just keep my mouth shut. I wouldn't learn as much, but I would avoid feeling so foolish. Thank you. Now, everytime I ever measure a pumpkin I will cringe inwardly remembering this conversation. Maybe I'm blond after all, and I just havn't had THAT explaned to me either! LOL Patience

I need to print this out for my mother! I have been trying to explain "parallel to the ground" for some time now. I like the drivers door referance, that's great. When I said "put it around like a belt around a waist" she said" how do I get it under the pumpkin?" This will go on my moms fridge as a referance guide. Thanks all. :)

That's because when you said "put it around like a belt" I, and probably your mom too, was thinking of the stem as the head, and the blossom as the foot. So, putting it around like a belt would involve running it around the middle between these two points. I don't know, maybe it's a woman thing. I'm still laughing over this. Patience

That's true. You should have seen me trying to explain over the phone the difference between a male flower and a female flower. OMG talk about frustration on my part. "so the one that has the small bump on the botoom is the male right." No mom, the one with the small bump is the female. "Do I cut it off to polinate?" No, if you cut it off how will the pumkin grow? "oh, I see, you cut off a second femals to pollinate." No, you cut off male flower to pollinate the female. "The male has the small bump on the bottom right?" (typical conversation with mom, repeat three or more times)
