well instead of sending everyone i talk to an email, i figured this would probably be the easiest way. My dreams of getting the much coveted 4 digit fruit are over for this season. Alas, i thought i had a real shot at it, and im still convinced that i did, but for this year it was not meant to be. Lost the big one last night after we got pummeled with a large dose of rain, in a very short period of time. Split right accross the blossom end. Ive been keeping some of your updated with the growth, but i guess its time to let the proverbial cat out of the bag.......est. weight 622 lbs at day 39, and still growing 22 lbs a day. My last 3 weeks of weight gains were 174,179, and 165. yeah, she was slowing down a bit! LOL.....anyway, it was a good run.......i suppose after winning long island 3 years in a row its time for someone else to grace the top spot. So, 1000 lbs is on the back burner for now, and if this one didnt make it, it would have been darn close. i cut the fruit open, and there was a surprisingly small amount of mature seeds in the fruit, actually, there was a surprisingly small amount of seeds period......very strange.....in any event, 2002 has led me to a new goal........pollinate this week, and get to 600lbs by weighoff time......can it be done? i have no idea, but im going to try.

Sorry for your loss Scott. Impressive growth as always. With a plant that strong you may just hit the 600mark as we certainly have growth weather in September here....assuming you dodge all the late season nasties like powdery and other funguses.....mine may be near donefor too...white cottony growths at stump area, gelatinous ooze at leaf joints near stump...reduced gains......G

sorry to hear about the loss Scott, must have been a real turn on to see it make so much growth the three weeks you quoted us. hard for a newbie to understand that you may still be able to hit 600 lbs with another fruit this time of year....hoping the best and that your new gets to 600 lbs before you get married....LOL...owen

thanks for the kind words guys, it means alot. im going to do my best to work with what i have. i know this one wont be a record breaker, but hey, it's all in good fun, and its all i have! LOL lets just hope she doesnt abort on me, because my options are few and far between at this point. dont worry Pappy, even if i dont bring a pumpkin to the weighoff this year, i'll be bringing my orange sneakers..and to add to the "look" i also have an orange watch this year!.....i took some pics of the fruit, when they get developed, i'll scan them and post them to the board. its all part of the game, id rather it happen now then a week or even a few days before the weighoff, i'll tell you that much. G......keep it together, im pulling for you........btw, i know you asked about 547 pollen the other night, i have 723 pollen if you're interested.

I feel very sorry for your loss, and for sure, that is a big loss. Otherwise I wonder what strategy is behind having 622lbs at day 39. Weather, soil, fertilizer, luck, all together? Saw many growers with incredible growing rates this year. But if you want to keep it as your secret, I would understand it for sure. Good luck for anything else you keep growing until your weighoff.

Scotty,

What a bummer! We had over 3" of rain (and hail)last night, and quite frankly, I'm afraid to look under the sheets! Guess we all got to take the good with the bad. Best of luck to you and your new wife come October!

p.s. Save me some seeds from that est. 622 (Please!)
Best of luck as a MARRIED AG grower and for this weeks' pollination!

Scott, sorry to hear that. 39 days was probably not enough time to mature the seeds. Sounds like it was growing aggressively. If any of the seeds look like they might germ, it sounds like they'll be a good candidate for next year. Once agian, sorry for the loss.

Wow Scotty, Sorry about the "one that got away" sounds like you got that patch brewing to perfection! Next year you're gonna get it! This wasn't the best growing conditions we've been having and it was cooking. You got plenty of things going this October...Might of been a little hectic draggin a thousand lber to the honeymoon suite...Keep up the great attitude and enjoy your honeymoon! chuck

Scott,
I do know how you feel! Yesterday, I lost a 334 OTT to blossum end split. Six days earlier, I lost a 321 OTT !!!!
It was the first time I had one go down to this demise.
You will get alot of sympathy from me! Yet a 5 gallon bucketfull won't make them hold together next season.

Scott, really sorry to hear about your lose. I guess it's true what you told me. sometimes it's just alot of luck growing a big pumpkin. With all the hard work, then just one night of heavy rain can ruin months of work and your dreams going down the drain. it's been really nice meeting you Scott. I could never thank you enough for all the help i've needed this year. You have taken your time to be there to help someone out. So in my book, YOUR still a WINNER.

Just read your post ..sorry to hear it.
Maybe time to experiment on the new fruit.
If you had an ideas you wanted to try but felt it was to risky now may be the time.

Scott,

Thats a really bad break but that was some three week run! I can't imagine how that felt. You certainly are dealing with it well. We all know you will be back in the race for quadruple digits next year.
