Hail Pumpkin Mavens! I know that some of you must have a solution to my current woe. Because I am often too involved when working in the garden to stop and get gloves, I now have hands covered with miserable little bumps caused by the spines on the vines and stems. My kids say that my hands are too scratchy when I touch them! Now, I am not the manicured, long-nailed, silky-smooth skin kinda gal, but I would like my kids to stop cringing when I go to pet them! Short of breaking down and wearing the darn gloves whenever I go near the patch, is there any solution that any of you use? Thanks! Patience

Patience, I guess you have to take it as it is. My wife, my family, me - no gloves workers at all. It´s that needed feeling you miss while wearing gloves. I´m very affected to biting insects and other stuff, have some thick leather gloves but never use them. Just gardeners destiny.

You know, that might be my solution! :-) I didn't mention my other problem because it seems more ridiculous - I am afraid of stepping on the plants when I go to the garden, so I go barefoot so that I can feel what I'm doing. So, I am having a similar problem with my feet! My husband wonders what kind of weirdo he married! LOL Patience

I've ALWAYS walked barefoot in my gardens & pumpkin patches for the exact same reasons. You can feel what you're stepping on before you apply pressure.....plus I'm whitetrash & we are always going around without shoes & shirts.

My opinion differs, & I don't think so. If you can't laugh and joke about yourself then you should check your sense of humor.

Hi Patience, Pumpkins are prickeley as are all cucerbits, some more than others. I have found that their sap is very hard to remove from your fingers and cloths. If you are pruning heavily or fertilizing deep in the patch please wear long sleeve shirts/pants and eyewear as they DO have spines that WILL hurt you... Best of luck, your scratched up partner, Gerry Gadberry

Him? Him? Wait a minute. Do I sound like a guy? Do I write like a guy? Having had to put up with growing up with a name like Patience, I ought at least to get the credit for my gender! I mean, the kids used to call me Consti-patience! It's a wonder I'm not scarred for life! (Just kidding) Anyway, Cuzbiker, a true gentleman, related to me, in the politest possible way, the meaning of the terms. Y'all should be ashamed of yourselves. You kiss your mamas with those mouths? LTMBB! Patience
