If I decided to keep 2 pumpkins on a plant would it be o.k. for them both to be on the same side ie, one on the right side of the main and the other on a righthand secondary.

just fought with that one myself...decided to cut the whole secondary vine off that the "other" one on the same side was growing on. Hopefully it will continue to grow, albeit more slowly, but won't rob anything from the fruit on the main ! Hope this gives you an option.
