How do I loosen the vine around the stem of the pumpkin to give it easier to rise off the ground, without damaging the vine? I hope I've asked this question right.

I cut the roots of the vine with a scissors and rised it carefully, putting some styropor blocks under. I wouldn´t do it all at one day, just over a week or so. Never get it beyond the point where you feel some tension on the vine.

do that in the afternoon while the vine is warm don't try to do it with cold temps in the morning....will sound like a bowl of rice krispies getting milk poured on!

Thanks for the advice guys. What do you think about digging right under the root and loosening the soil around the root to allow the vine to rise????

SD. hey you will probably have to loosen up two sometime three nodes before the pumpkin to get the slack and gradual rise..not just the one at the pumpkin! so some of them are gonna be floating no matter what! a couple before and a couple after depending on how much slack you need...

Dexter's post sounds like he's doing the same thing and only trying to free up the vine at the pumpkin node. Gonna need more then that for the shoulders unless the stem is a foot.
