Was wondering why I lost the 2 biggest pumpkins around the same time. One was 80" cir. and the other was right behind at 76" cir. They both got little cracks on top of the pumpkin around the stem. They are now turning soft and haven't growing at all. The vine was in the air so thought there wouldn't be any stress. The cracks are away from the stem. Is it the hot weather here in Indiana or did I do something wrong being this is my first year. The vines are all still green and growing well. Had shad covers made for both. Might have another one growing but is so far behind now. Any insight on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Bummed out rookie.

once the pumpkins crack into the cavity they are goners and will rot. unfortunatly I think your problem may be genetic. a genetic spliter. I had a plant one year... every single pumpkin split right under the stem when they got to the 75 to 100 lb range. i kept setting them and they kept spliting - about 20 in all.
