Ok, I want to grow an AG next year (this year I only have big max, etc.). Since I live in suburbia, my only hope is to plant the vine in my "garden" and let it spread across the lawn. The trouble is that the squash plants that are growing there now have mildew (downy or powdery, I'm not sure which). I have been battling it with Daconil, but it's stuborn stuff! How can I "sterilize" this area so that any AG I plant there next year will not be infected?
Thanks! Patience

Patience,,,not sure if PM is in soil,,I think moist conditions cause this...Full sun is best,,last 2 years I have been in part shade and it shows up on a regular basis...Try watering in morning,,or later in afternoon so plants can dry before dark....Hope this info will help ya out..If I'm wrong,,I'm sure someone will correct me...Just my two cents....here is a few links you can check out on web..... http://henderson.ces.state.nc.us/newsletters/veg/99-08/5.shtml

I bet you're right. It is a partly shady location. But my lawn gets full sun. Do you think that if most of the vine is on the lawn, but the stem is in this partly shady area, that I will have the problem? Of course the squash (zucchini) is a smallish plant, and is entirely in the part-shade. Thanks so much for your help!

Once you have a fungus, the fungicide won't cure the infected leaves. The new growth should be good however.

Yo patience,
Mildew is everywhere all the time..you cannot get rid of it. But it only grows when the conditions are right..warm damp still days. Then it breeds like wildfire. You need to spray a fungicide on the plant before it starts so you need to have a spraying regime in place so as to be protected against it. Once every week or so will keep it at bay. Once you get mildew on the plant then it is too late although new growth will not be affected if that is sprayed.
