This may be a dump questions, but what is it with the name of the seems? Is that the weight of the pumpkin and the growers name? Please enlighten. Jared

usually followed by the year too but that often gets dropped unless it is needed to differentiate between too seeds. For example there is a 940 Mombert 1998 and a 940 Mombert 2000.

Do you think it is the seed from that specific pumpkin or the conditions the pumpkin was in. Is it because a pumpkin get to 940 lbs, is it more a desirable seed than one at say 500 lbs. Is it not how they or where they where grown? One guy may had used more fertilizer or had a longer growing season etc? What about the seeds in the store from Dill's Atlantic Giant? Arent those seeds just as good as 940 Mombert 2000? Thanks, Jared

This is my first year and this fall when i get seeds I am not going to make my decision on only size, I am going to look for seeds from pumpkins that had good color and good shape. When you buy a packet of seeds (which i did this year)you wont know how it will look. That is just what i think.

Genetics are importent in getting the qualities you desire in a pumpkin. That doesn't mean that the pumpkin you grow will have the exact same features, but you have a better chance with seeds from a grower who knows the history of the seed. . I'm pretty sure that genetics help a lot, but enviroment probably plays just as an important role. A great seed won't do well in poor soil with little nutrients. I hope the more experienced growers will help me if my thinking is wrong.

It´s my first year also and my choice was the same as for Ben - color and shape. Just take a look at the seed list or the weighoff picture galleries here on BP and you will see the "biggest" is not always a beauty. Just make your choice but take a look here before: http://jozepumpkins.homestead.com/home.html Reading the articles, you´ll find out many of the things you´ve mentioned are to be considered to find the "right seed for you". But finally you´ll never know what you have at the end of your season.
