I've read several posts where people were working to have pumpkins at 60 inches 20 days after pollination. Is this number special for some reason?

it's a number that Al Eaton has come up with as a measure for "good growth". Some use it as a measure of how they are doing very early on. but fruit growth can vary so much depending on region and for each particular plant- that I think is isn't particualurly useful. It is better to establish you own benchmark from previous years fruit.

We would all like "Jack Rabbit" pumpkins! However, in the Pacific Northwest, it "slow and steady".
