I am trying to keep Fatback until Aug. 24th for a weigh-off. Help me! I want the seeds. Should I try to get both and hold off til after the weigh-off or should I forego the weigh-off in order to get good viable seed? And by the way, any suggestions for preserving a fruit for about 6 weeks will be very welcome also. Thanks Ya'll!!

can you keep it in a cool garage? It worked for me last year when I had to cull one in Aug. I saved it until the end of september.

A cool garage or basement is good and everything should be fine. Keep spraying your 10% bleach solution over the entire pumpkin. You may lose a few seeds to premature pollination within the pumpkin but this should be just a few seeds. Where is the weighoff? I'd like to attend if I could. Would just be sight seeing this time. Mine is just 16 days old. Tracking so far on Fatback's numbers:^>

Hall County Farmers Market I think. That's around Flowery Branch. I am waiting for Bob A. to fill me in. I will post in "weigh-offs" when I hear something definitive.

Pappy: go to home depot in the garden dept you'll find a chemical called "WILT PROOF" the guys up here in the north east use it to hold moisture till weighoff time also it puts a high gloss finish on the fruit,it's baseiclly for drought conditions on plants you spray the leafs and it locks in moisture, sorry about the yelling, must be my fat fingers again.Best if luck.John G

Hi pappy, I put my 2001 fair pumpkin harvested Sept 6 (519#) in the shade and tried to keep it cool till Halloween, when I carved it on Oct 20th most of the seeds were already germinated and the pumpkin was really rotting.... I would say that if you want viable seeds for next season cut a small hole in the back and grab a bunch now and then put the ole plug back in... Once it's cut off it is going to rot! best of wishes G. Gadberry

I made an executive decision today and decided to see if Fatback had any seeds in her. My wife and I extracted 714 of the prettiest seed you ever saw!!! (Yes I counted every one of them. LOL!) Glad I did because there were 3 and 4 inch deep splits on the inside that weren't looking too good. Wouldn't have made it another month in that condition.

I am going to send 200 to BP.com (if my seeds are worthy) If you want more than 2, e-mail your addresses and I'll do what I can.
