What is the difference between a giant squash and a giant pumpkin other than the color? Or can a squash be orange? Can a pumpkin be green? PVZ

Just the color, although even that can be complicated.

Squash is green, pumpkin is orange or cream.

Ok, so I gather that when you finaly get a fruit big enough to take to the weigh-off, there is some evaluation done by the judges as to whether it is a squash or a pumpkin? What are the criteria? Since all my info has come from the discussions on this site, I have gathered that squash is less desireable. Also, I never see anyone talking about their prize-winning squash. Finally, I have seen posts that suggest that a squash and a pumpkin can come from the same plant?! So - Do they have squash weigh-offs? How come no one seems to like to have a squash? PVZ

Check out the GPC News message board for their ruling on color.....it's not very clear but there it is anyway.

Some people prefer the green over orange but it ain't easy being green:)

Some people actually prefer to grow a squash. However, most people shoot for a pumpkin. There's something about a beatiful huge orange fruit that just.... Sorry, just got off track for a second. There are weigh-offs for squash, usually at the same place and time as the pumpkin. There's prize money and bragging rights as well, but most attention is centered around the pumpkin. The bttom line is, whatever you end up growing, the bigger the better!!!

So is it true that the same plant can produce both? How come? PVZ
