Subject: 2 nice ones ...to Prune or not to Prune + vine rot

ok about 8 feet from my main vine in both direction (KINDA like a horseshoe) I have a pumpkin both the size of large cantaloupes approc the same space away from the main vine....WHAT should i do....both vines that shot out of the main look healthy...one vine/pumpkin is not better than the other....Should I cut one I want a biggy this year..Also my vines are out of control....I have read on BP.com that alot of guys cut the vines....Doesn't it rot back to the main???..Help I m unsure how long to wait before I cut the twin or when to do pruning the vine...I dont wanna take away from growing a biggy....Should I wait till they are bigger???HELP HELP HELP

start measuring the circumfrance of both pumpkins and see which is growing faster. I would keep both on until the one you chose to keep is atleast 40 inches around even more if you want to. The longer both are on, it gives you a safety valve incase one aborts or splits, etc. It should'nt affect your final weight at all waiting awhile.

There's no harm in leaving them both on. If they're both on seperate vines the won't rob eachother of much energy, and it also provides a little insurence incase one splits or something. Tom

I'd leave both on. There might be a very slight difference in the final size when both are left on, but you'll sleep alot easier at night!!

Hi; Well it sure sounds like your having a hard time deciding. What I would do, only because it sounds like you want to kick some ass this year on your weigh-off is... USE BLEACH! A friend of mine told me that... AND.. You might just know who he is..... Good Luck... AND Plz let me know how it turns out... BUT I'm sure I'll hear about it regardless.
