When is the best time to start positioning the fruit 90 degrees if possible to the vine? Does one wait till the pumpkin is a certain size?

How much can you get away with before it snaps? I know it's all relative but just a quick guess. Mine is the size of a cantaloupe right now and was just wondering.

Always less then the least amount you thought! Never a warning before the pop!

For a first timer, only move them slightly, quarter inch everyday....i can move them a good inch some days, but very carefully....you just have to be careful and move the fruit according to the flexibility of the stem. The longer the stem the easier it is.....not including the thick dark green stems of squash. Those are some stiff stems.

test the water every day...been moving mine every day it will budge. using a round dowel against the stem to avoid scarring the pumpkin. lucky to have a long enough stem to work with!

John, I would not move them more than 1 inch. Better to be on safe side, that snapping noise is a hideous sound..Joe

and you have to remember that the best time to move your fruit is in the heat of the day when the stems are most plyable moveing them in the early morning could be the end of your season...
