Subject: SVB moth attacks

went to check up on things, and a red looking moth-thing flies and lands on a leaf...chased it and lost it. then stand still for a while, and it coems back, so i spray with mathalzion, and knock off of leaf, then grind into ground with a brick....then i can't find the carcass...not good. Didn't have any of these last year...what to do? SVB moths have invaded somerset county

The moths lay eggs on the underside vines/leaf stalks for the most part. Here is what the eggs look like:

I usually hand pick as many as I can find on my plants. I've been coating my main vine with malathion/sevin (concentrating more around the stump area) and burying my secondaries. The malathion should kill them once they try to bore into the main, and boring into a secondary will be more of a challenege since they're buried. I've had eggs around my plants since July 1 and have been doing this since.. so far I don't have any borer damage. Hopefully I can keep them under control this year!

This is the first year I've seen the nasty things (my third year growing). I've killed two by hand and have been very religious about my every other week isotox and on the odd week, malathion. As a side note, on the week I spray with isotox, I usually spray with daconil so that's an every other week occurance. So far so good about not getting any major bug damage.
