It's really hot here in central Alberta, but it sounds like you folks in California have it even worse!!!

Awww, come on Smitty, it ain't that bad here.... It's Ideal! all we need is some rain! Maybe Edmonton gets more HOT AIR than Stony Plain! (probably from Ralph Klein*)...LOL *Ralph Klein is the premier of Alberta
Yes, gotta feel sorry for the folks in Calif... I hear it's up to 110 or more...great for melons, oranges, dates and grapes.
It was soooo cold here this spring that I thought of planting only FROZEN vegetables... french fries & snow peas....LOL

Old Ralphie does seem to be full of hot air. I'd like to point out that he actually lives in Calgary! lol
You're right, the heat here could be worse, but it's tough getting any sleep at night with no air conditioning! As long as the pumpkin keeps growing, I guess I'm happy.

In Connecticut We had good heat wave...now it looks like we're in for a couple of record cold nights...the're predicting 48 degrees tonight. We're also getting hazy skies from Canada's wild fires...you can even smell the smoke...Chris

Yes, we are very proud of our town. I'm actually out by Hubbles Lake, about 5 miles northwest of Stony in the Glory Hills (aptly named)
(I was referring to Ralph being in the Legislature in Edmonton)
Hey, do you think Lois Hole ( the Lt. Governor of Alberta) would like to give out the trophies to the winners at Smoky Lake? I'm going to contact her office and see if she can be there, knowing her love of gardening. She officiated at the opening of the new Stony Plain Country Market at the Exhibition Grounds.

Hi, Bushwacker, yes we had our share of fires here about a month ago including one just 4 miles from my place that destroyed a couple of houses. Our biggest fire was up near Fort MacMurray and covered nearly 750,000 acres. As for the cold temps, it was 3C (37F) here on July 6....talk about extremes!

I told ya darby that by lighting the woods on fire it would not raise the temp in Alberta enough so your punkin would start growing...
I can just picture it... A rageing forest fire eating up every thing in its path surrounding darby in his punkin patch watering like a crazy man while his house behind him goes up in flames. Now that is dedication.

Hey Darby, you should call the Honorable Mrs. Hole. If her schedule allowed, she'd probably love to be there. She's awful busy, but her heart is still in gardening!

Whew! It is 95 degrees in the shade here in Portland. I sprayed down the plants when I went home for lunch, but they continue to wilt. Asked the wife if she'd mist them every 20 mins. She looked at me like I was crazy. It is supposed to be like this for the next week. Just need another 2 feet from my main & then I can set some fruit. Hopefully it will have cooled down by then. Hi, Ceis, make sure you give the ground around your plant a good soaking....considering they ABSORB most of the moisture through their roots and root-hairs and very little is absorbed from their foliage. Most of the moisture is RELEASED through the foliage. If your plants have a well developed root system, they won't wilt....Mine were looking very sturdy at the same temps you're experiencing there today, 90-95F and no wilting or browning.

Well boys the diary is updated and info on the thunder creeks too Greg.
Darby ya might want to have a look. I got a pic of your awsome entry in last years weigh-off at Smoky Lake posted for every one to SEE...
As for keeping with this discussion, I hear it is suppose to hit 39 degrees or about 102 F here Friday, went out and put a huge tarp over the hole plant for a shade structure and as well will be checking the wind break, suppose to be high 30's or 95 to 100 here for a week, I hate to say it but I since another huge storm coming once it cools down again.
Front page of tonights paper showed a funnel cloud just on the out skirts of the city tuesday and the temp was only 27 degrees.

Temp here reached 31C (88F) this afternoon but there was a nice steady breeze to moderate it. Supposed to be hotter tomorrow. I wonder if a pumpkin could be sucked up by a funnel cloud and flung into a low earth orbit??? LOL Gee... a pumpkin satellite! "PUMPNIK"
Hey, Ern, where's this "awesome entry" posted?

Thanks Darby - I soaked the trunk real good when I got home. I must have let it get a little dry. Sometimes it is hard to tell with my clay soil. I think I will lose the last two leaves on the #2 555 Neuville. They got a little crispy even with the 5 mistings they rec'd throughout the day. Ernie - The tarp sounds like a good idea - or at least a little coverage should help. Supposed to be in the high 90s for the next 5 days here. LMAO on your 'competition' photo. Cheers - Ceis

Scorching 97 degrees (F for our Celcius friends)) here in the Spokane area today. I had the misters on and hand watered stuff. We are selling the residential plot for a custom home on acreage so in the two hours I was house huntin I scorched the crap out of a few leaves on my Daletas plant that "out grew" the misters.... It's supposed to be 101 tommorrow and I am not leaving the patch ( 2 week Vacation) :}

It was some where between 107 and 110 here today depending what tree you were under. The hummity was about 48% All of my plants have handled the heat pretty good except 1., A 649 hester has been wilted almost everyday this week no matter what i do. Thought it was dead one day. But it perks up in the evening and looks good in the mornings. Notice that its trying to put on new growth . Have Misters coming on every 2 hours running them for 5 mins. Seems to be working. just hope i don,t get them too wet or water logged. Also have some shade for them too

Just for the record I checked this website for temps around the world and Hermosillo, Mexico is going to 118F (48C) today!, cooling off to 114 tomorrow. I wonder if you could bake a pumpkin pie at that temp?

Hay Darby, I don't know about baking a pumpkin pie in that heat but if you are in the Spokane area today with out a hat you will be baking a brain bucket for sure 101 F! I have been hand watering, and using the misters, and threw sheets over the new growth, and I am still scorching leaves! The pumpkins seem to like the heat though, my 1230 Daletas is growing leaps and bounds! She doubled in two days, I have shade over it, belting matterial under it, and lots of sweat standing in the full sun buring vines, and watering. Phew, I had to come inside and A/C off while Hydrating (God bless Adolph Coors)to post this weather update......!

Don't blow yer cool, GADS! The only place I found that's hotter than Mex. is over in the Algerian Sahara, a balmy 124 degrees! with blowing dust. On the other hand, we could all head down to Antarctica where it's currently winter.... but leave your punkin behind... it's -95F near the South Pole. My punkin is doing just great, I've got screens around it and the current temp is 93 F. There's a severe thunderstorm warning for Central Alberta and I saw a large thunderhead building 30- 50 miles south of here.

109 today they say 110-112 fri and may see 115 by sat. Plants are taking it in the shorts covering tips does no good. Drenching soil in morn afternoon and evening. My females picked now to open. Crossing my fingers they are all 12' plus out. Sounds like lots of ice for them. So hot 85% of all construction shut down to keep workers alive. I have never left a job in nine yrs. Did today.....its nice to be the boss. Ken

Hey jeff......check this out. Went on a Harley trip the the UP of Michigan in 97, and toured the coastline. As we made our way up to the Kewenaw Penninsula, an old guy at the general store said we just missed the ice hunks floating out of the bay by 3 days...that was in the 2nd week of July believe it or not! We had all our leather on, and sweatshirts underneath...it was still cold if we were within 5 miles of the shoreline! cuzbiker
