My 845 Bobier plant has a pumpkin pollinated at about the 12 foot mark. Ive ear marked this one as probably the one to go with. 4 ft down from that the vine curled up and cracked perpendicular to the main( ie straight across) the break is about 30-40% the circumference of the main. I buried it, but dont know if I should cut it and let a secondary become the new main vein. Also Ive had this happen before and am not sure how to prevent the big curl with the break. Thanks David

I would start training the last 2ndry on the plant before the crack straight ahead ( like the main). Cut off the remaining wasted main after that 2ndary & apply some captan to the cut. Once it's dried & healed over ( appx. 5 days) bury it like you would your main vine & start running more 2ndries off the "new" main. I think you'll be happy with the results.........Paul

screw the damn main! once you have that one set, and you decide to go with it, you dont even need the main anymore. i cut the main on my 814 last year about 4" past the fruit.

David, I have the same problem with my 1230 Daletas. I set the "Package", and have to agree with Farmer Scott screw the main from there on out. I let a pumpkin be a pumpkin, of course you would want to encourage growth to the limits of your patch but you can't make a cat bark... Best wishes

Opps, as an after thought, how many other growers out there are having problems with flat vines from the 845 seed stock on the female or male side? My 1167 Handy (846 Calai female x 801 Handy male) and my 1230 Daletas (705 Stelts female x 846 Calai male) are flat/double vineres on the main only all other vines are beautifull round and vigerous.???

David, Last year, on the plant that grew my 1061, the tip of the main was fried and died on a 96-degree day. This happened about 6 feet past the fruit. I allowed a secondary to take over as the main and that worked out well. Your main, as you describe it, might be too difficult to work with. Gads, if you're keeping track, put me down for one flat vined 846. I think I have it back on track, but it's way behind the other plants..Joe P.

My Eisenhaur plant has the 846 as female parent. It was (and is?) flatvining for me, for other growers as well.

See the picks I posted last night of the 1020 Papez 01 & 594 Smith 01, the Octipumpkins, they should be in the gallery today. The 1020's mother was the 846 Calai. Of more interest maybe is that Andy Papez said the male parent, the 1056.5 Dueck, (935 Lloyd X 825.5 Shymanski) may be contributing some of the 825.5's inherent problems.
So, is anyone growing any or anything containing the following seeds or parentage that is going flat or double (not 2 mains "double" but a "double width" flat vine putting out double tendrils, double males, etc.):
846 Calai 1056.5 Dueck 825.5 Shymanski 594 Smith 01 1020 Papez 01
Post you flat/doubles/ribbon/mutant problems from any of the above.
Thanks. Mark

David, no one is more sorry than me to hear your main snapped. last year some idiot walked by and CUT the end of of my main. As you know that pumpkin beat yours by 3 pounds and I was trying to keep that trick a secret. Now what am I going to do to get another 3 pounds? All kidding aside, don't worry about it. Cut it off completely. You will like the results.
