When a pumpkin is polinated, do some grow fast and some grow slow right away? Last year mine took off, a 22 inch circ. in 8 days, this year its only about 10.5 inches in 6 days so far, much slower. Just curious if this is normal or not good news. Thanks, Jim

Jim,
every pumpkin is different. some grow fast and some grow slow. some pack on the weight early, and others grow fast later. either way, good luck with your giants!

Hi Jim, I have several pollinated on each plant some are round, some are long, some are getting up faster than others. I learned early allways try to get one on the MAIN vine. As you deadhead the secondaries and cull the stragglers it pushes more juice into the main fruit. I have a secondary main pumpkin on my 644 that was pollinated a day earlier than one on the main it is growing twice as fast but is also only 4 ft from the stump...

Jim, Check out my website- its listed in the links section and its called Joze Giant pumpkin site. There I have listed growth data from three pumpkins in the 700lb range. Starting with day 10 through day 80. It serves as a good reference if you are shooting for 700+

Pumpkins on the same plant can grow at different rates. Some heavy hitters suggest letting several fruits set then measure each one's circumference every day and track them to see which is growing fastest. Save the most aggressive growing one that is on the right position on the main vine, even an extra 1/2 inch per day will make for BIG pounds come October.
