I noticed a slug the other day on my Van Plant. Due to the really hot temps lately, Im always pouring on the water and everything is kept really damp. I assume slugs like this kind of environment, dark and damp. Anyhow, what should I do? Should my Scimitar work on these guys? Thanks, Mike

Hey Mike, I use slug and snail bait. I take small butter dish lids and turn them over and put the bait on the lid then I place by the stump. Since the slugs come out at night they will feed on this and then not be able to get back to cover by the time day light comes. Turns them to mush. Hope this helps.....polka dot

I assumed that you meant your post for people, not the slugs! Since you are writing to people, you should be more specific as to who the stuff is to be "tested" on!<g>

Mike - You are right the dark moist environment is what the slugs really like. I have been using Cory's slug and snail death - the old english formula. This stuff works like a charm. I apply in silver dollar sized piles in designated areas. My garden was infested with slugs so I re-apply every week in different areas. They will really come out if you have rain in the late evening or at night. Good to set traps then. I HATE the slugs. - Ceis

Lay some old boards out, the next morning , flip them over and that's were they will be. Squish 'em or sprinkle with a little table salt. (They'll disintegrate right before your eyes!) Also they are attracted to a shallow pan buried at ground level with beer. (they'll drown.)

Or instead of boards, all aphids, slugs, vine borers, and all those pests that we hate will go to just where you want them to go if you lay down any orange peels and lemon peels and things of that sort but try the 1/2 cup of vinegar, 2 tbsp. of hot chili pepper puree, and 1 tbsp. of liquid dish soap. Mix all ingredients in a cup of warm water one, works like a charm for me!!!!!

just put beer in a little bowl or can..the slugs will slide right by the most tender morsel for a good drink..awful waste of good beer though..

I've also heard that the beer works great from my own grandmother,a Gardener from way back, she used cat food cans recessed level with the ground, they came from far and near just for the beer!

Wow, thanks everyone. Many options I see. I think I will try the beer thing first. Thanks again, Mike

In our news this morning: US scientists suggest pouring coffee around plants to get rid of slugs. A very strong coffee will even kill them (the plants or the slugs!?) - well something more to try out.

I would rather use slug bait and drink the beer.

I saw on a garden show once that you could put a 1 inch band of copper around your garden and that would keep the slugs out. What happend it the trail they leaves reacts with the copper and causes a small electrical charge and the slugs turn around. you just need to make sure of 2 things 1 that all the slugs are out of your patch and 2 that there are no bridges over the copper IE sticks leaves ect.
