Hello everyone, hope all is well!!!! I was just wondering about mint compost, I haves some mint, so is this stuff any good??? How do you make it??? Can some spearmint work??? Do you have to steam all the "good stuff" out of it before using it, or can you just harvest it, and start making it right away???? Thanks, Steven

Hi Steven, sounds like great stuff to me! I compost catnip mint along with everything else in my bin, and catnip has excellent pest deterrent qualities. I also companion plant catnip mint along with other mints throughout the garden to deter pests- it specially deters squash bugs. You might want to plant nasturtiums, petunias, calendula and wormwood as well- they all have pest deterrent qualities. Certainly beats using synthetic sprays and it adds some colour to the garden as well. Does your mint compost have a nice fragrance? I can remember driving by a huge field of mint in western Montana and savouring the aroma!

Yes, It has a strong smell, and flavor, I use it in my tea and thought I might as well put it into the garden as compost, or piled it up and till it to the garden in the fall, plus there is so much of it and if it can be used to help my pumpkins and tomatoes, then I say that is a great idea. I heard this from Brett Hester's feature grower chat transcript, thank you Ken and John(for everything you do and making the best website ever!!! and Kilr(for putting almost or all of the feature grower chats together)and if anyone has his email so I can ask him about it please email me privately at [email protected], or if the Pumpkinguru himself(Brett Hester) could post a reply that would be great!!! Thanks Steven

Be careful with mint compost, mint roots very quickly and can take over everything in sight even faster. Tom

Tom, The mint that Brett uses is very very dry. I do not see how it could begin to root. You'd give your left "arm" to have that mint in your patch! Brett's soil is to die for!
