I see alot of guys posting photo's on here. They got nice plants but no wind breaker's up and they haven't buried the vines at all. This is like getting caught with your pants down. I wouls hate to have a thunderstorm hit my area and high winds. My plants would be ruined.

...but there are always different ways to go. Have a hail storm - no effect from wind brakes. Have vine rot - no effect from burying them. So it´s up to everyone´s personal decision.

I agree with floh. It's up to the grower. Wind breaks can be put up if heavy storms are predicted. In my area I'm "low down" so I don't worry too much about high winds. And "luck" has a bit to do with it. Many, many obstacles in this game. Good soccer match flow, go for the bigun' I hope ya'll go all the way!!

I agree that it's up to the grower.

For me, I need wind breaks in my area. I live in the windiest part of Minnesota. There are over 200 wind turbines in this area! We've had winds in the 20-30mph range the last few days, and right now my vines are very susecptable to wind damage as they are just laying over.

I have very high winds here my brakes are rolled up next to each plant. I watch the weather very close to no if I will need them. If so I come in of a job and put them up . My vines are not buried yet. And yes your right I'm begin for disaster. Will get them buried this weekend.
Thanks for the reminder PB

All I have been buried is the tap root to help hold my main vine in the direction that I want it to run do yuh all think I should be covering the whole vine or is the tap roots enough???

Also growers are in for a big problem with vine bores. I always bury my vines so i don't have any problem with vine bores

Another problem is flat-vining. When you think you have the right seed growing and nothing is wrong, the plant flat-vines on you. It's a real nightmare and it's unpredictable.

P.S.-Is there a way to prevent flat-vining?

I don't know if one can prevent flat-vining, just seems like it happens every once in a while. Might be a genetic thing. Sometimes the vine splits into a couple of mains and takes care of itself. One of my plants this year flatvined and I ended up terminating the main. That allowed a secondary to grown out and it has now taken over and become a normal main. Getting back to the original thread, I highly recommend some sort of wind protection, until the plant full grown...Joe P.
