Dear List: I posted a photo today in my diary section asking for any input on the cut on my main vine. I discovered it yesterday at about the 6 foot mark. It is currently at a foot before the tip. Any advice out there? Do you think it will heal or at this stage of the game should I sever it and go with the next secondary. Thanks for your help.

You have done well. If I were you, I would support the plant well so that it cannot twist in the wind. You will know shortly if the nourishment to the tip has been affected. If a female shows up, pollinate it. If it grows to 800 pounds, I'd say that it had little effect.<g>

ned-a grower named wes@calif on this site--june 2nd, i think, had severed his main vine off because it was starting out as a flatty--i don't think he's having any fun right now, so i don't think you should cut off the main at this time! i'm growing a Willemse 706.5, and early on i was pushing in a 1/2-inch sharpened dowel to provide support for the up-in-the-air main vine, and apparently, plainly visible on the videotape was me pushing harder than i thought i was on the main vine and breaking it half-thru-- moral of story?--none---but the vine is growing right along as if nuthin' happened! this pleases me! i got a second chance, it seems.....hope yours does well also! p'pal

wes@calif and me we have the same Eisenhaur plants and they appeared to be identic from the beginning. He cut his main vine which turned out to be a double vine for me. It divided yesterday with a female on both new vines, so I cut one of the twins tonight. Now I have a an "ordinary shaped" main vine to go with. It´s still early in the season, don´t get into panic.

I'm I having fun yet? Maybe, the pumpkin patch is still going strong. What did I learn this year? When terminating main vines, pinch off the growth tip, don't hack-off 2 feet! And, we could all learn from the patience of the Germans. Pumpkins are resilient they do recover. Don't count me out until the final results are in. Sometimes there are BlackCloud days.
