Is there any correlation between the size and thickness of the pumpkin stem and potential size of the fruit? Compared to my two other plants, the 1230 delatas stem and vine looks hugh. I'm almost afraid to try to direct it in the direciton I want it to grow for fear of breaking it. Any thoughts, or doesn't it mean anything?

steelydave my 1230 also has a big ole fat vine about 8' long now I have been slowly guiding it about 20 degrees from where she laid down bit by bit. Holland was correct they go oppisite the first true leafe. The 1230 is an awesome plant! Best of luck, GADS

I remember what Geneva told me last year. Those never-to-be-forgotten words....."Don't count your chickens before they hatch!" There are many perils ahead!

My 1061.5 Ciliberto did not grow it's main vine away from the first true leaf. It grow about a 45 degree angle from the first true leaf. the Ciliberto has a flat main. But by 1025 Bobier has a very huge main vine

move the fruit carefully about a half inch per day until it is perpendicular to the vine. Put something underneath to help prevent critters and fungus from making their home in your pumpkin. My 3 cents

As far as vines goes I would always prefer a large vine, think of it as the garden hose feeding your fruit. When I cull my plants I do it more on stump size than the way the leaves might look. Most of the leaves you see at the early stage will be removed when you clean out the stump area. And for stems the longer the better ( much less stem stress).
