My Kuhn 1020 has a split stem right at the point where it comes out of the ground about 2-3 inches long.Plant seems to be growing ok (about 3-4' long)I've staked the plant down and protected it from the wind, what gives?Should I bury the vine at this point?I've heard of captan but I'm not sure if thats even the right thing to use or if the local garden center even has it.Any advice for this second year grower would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Steve

Captan is toxic and carcinogenic. Just dust split with some sulfur dust (cheaper and safer). I would probably bury it after it heals in a day or two, others wouldn't bury it. Some others yet bury the stump, and uncover it later on to keep it from rotting. You make the call!(It's all a learning process.)

as part of the learning process,--what's the best way to heal a cut? let the air get to it....
then keep it band-aided!
i'm no expert, but what about doing the sulfur thing, and then creating a small tent of sorts around the stem where it meets the ground, perhaps from a 2-liter soda bottle or
an actual piece of window screen-- i have the same problem on my Checkon 815, and this is what i plan to do, minus the sulfur....this way i can see how it's doing...
but let us know how it go.....
