well the branches of your x-mas tree are your secondarys so the ends should be cut and buryed at 8 to 15 feet or so (depending on how much space you have)make shure to pinch any growth off of the secondarys.

WP,
I've wondered that myself and see opinions for and against removing over other secondary. For me it's a matter of space....so I'm keeping all that I can. If I had twice as much space I would probably prune some just to have easier access to my plant.

I would think by trimmming every other secondary would provide you with much healither and larger secondaries,as well as larger leaves....In return,,a better organized root system,,,which would equal a stronger plant...

Roughly, each secondary will be able to grow 12' long or I can go a little longer on one side by letting them grow into the yard (any opinions). My plants are in a little more than 500 sq feet, not counting what ever I allow to grow beyond the patch boundries. Is 500 big enough that I should consider removing some secondaries??? Still cornfused./?.>!@3<$%7 Anyone know what the big dogs do? Maybe ill remove every third????? ANY ADVICE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED......THANKS Mike

An excerpt from the featured growers chat with Dave Stelts. Is that a big enough dog for you? :)
Brian C.: Do you remove every other secondary? Buckeyepollinator: I leave all 2nd vines

You may want to ask Ken D about letting the vines grow into the yard. Seems to me I remember him saying that the vines lying in the wet grass gave him real bad mildew or something like that.

Oh, one more thing from the same chat with Dave Stelts. The plant that grew his 1140 was 500 square feet.
