long enough to apply the proper amout of water for your patch condisions and size.
I had a barrel system - two 55 gallon barrels attached to two soaker hoses for each plot. it it was hot and dry i'd go thorugh all 110 gallons a day.
it varies greatly depending on your patch soil, the weather, etc... but the plants need 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water per week. a 1000 sq ft patch need 623 gallons per week or 133.5 gallons per day to get 1 inch of water per week. that will cover the whole patch... if your plant is smaller you can get away with less. but you want to water an area larger than you plant size- especially near the stump.
I don't know what the flow rate of a soaker hose is. if you really wanted to know you could put one in a small plastic swimming pool and time how long it takes to fill it up. then measure how many gallons are in the pool. then you would have an application rate... so many gallons per so many minutes. then you could ratio the time out to get the number of gallons you want.

Should the soaker hose run above or below the vine?
