Has anyone heard of soaking cigarettes in water and using that water to spray on the leaves to deter cucumber beetles? If so, how many nasty cigarettes per gallon of water work?

I do something similar. I sit in my pumpkin patch and smoke cigarettes. The smoke keeps away the bugs.....it also helps Phillip Morris pay off the Tobacco Settlement.

Nothing like a Camel and a Bud as I tender my patch. But i've never heard of a spray with a tobacco base. Good for bee stings as folklore goes.

Actually I'm helping R.J. Reynolds....not Phillip Morris. Sorry for the confusion.

Jerry Baker, as seen on TV, use tobacco in some of his formulas. i think he uses chewing tobacco not cigarettes. i've looked on his web site in the past and i know he has some formulas there. go to www.jerrybaker.com and look under tips & tonics ... Ok i did that... here is one of them... 1 cup of liquid dish soap, 1 cup of chewing tobacco juice*, and 1 cup of antiseptic mouthwash
and apply it with your 20 gallon hose-end sprayer.
*Place three fingers of chewing tobacco in an old nylon stocking and soak in a gallon of hot water until the mixture is dark brown.

Warning! The Pumpkin General has issued the following warning:
Use of tobacco products can cause the spread of tobacco mosaic virus, which can affect tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, spinach, and other crops! Many greenhouses ban the use of tobacco products to avoid contaminating the greenhouse. And you thought it was just bad for humans!

Just let your plants get the tobacco mosaic virus and then sue the tobacco companys for damages.

I like svrichb's thinking...Could be a class action suit for all the AG growers... We lost some good plants to that dreaded virus...and they knew about the problem years ago and paid off jerry baker to keep it quiet!

My wife introduced the tobacco method to me some years ago. It´s a recipe from times where they had nothing else against bugs. One package of Drum tobacco (or else to roll on your own), cook(!) it in a quarter gal. of water, give it through a filter into a sprayer. Used this on roses and spices last week - works fine! No risk of virus because of cooking. We have another biological product that bases on Pyrethrum, a neurotoxin from chrysanthemum. After applying I saw beetles falling off a flower like drunken. I would like to send it to someone of you just to see if it works for your beetles as well. It never burnt any of my plants.
