I started my seeds on 6/1 using the advanced seed starting method. 6/2 placed all seeds in 4" peat pots. 6/6 all seeds that I started have germinated. Some have just poked thru the potting soil(you can barely see green) and the roots have all ready come thru(1-2")bottom of the peat pots. Are the roots really this aggressive?....Tom
Going to place them in their mounds tomarrow if the weather is halfway nice.

I start mine in one gallon pots with "picture window" sides. I had an Emmons 992.5 show roots near the bottom....6" long...BEFORE the first leaf was fully formed!! Now THAT'S an aggressive plant!

I always leave the peat pots alone they are biodegradable and the plant roots just grow right through them, AG's aint to keen with having their roots disturbed.

I put a few extra holes in the bottom (before I placed the seeds in them) of the peat pot. When I planted them today I pulled a little of the sides down and planted pot and all. Feels good to finally have them in the ground after the wet spring that we have had....Tom

Yo glenn, Sherry planted hers last year with the pots left on...caused the roots to become clumped together in the ground and the plant suffered...leaves turned yellow and died. Ask her...Yeah Tom make room for the roots to get out.

i may be about 2 weeks behind this post, but better late than never...my experience with the peat pots is this: if the pot has become loose around the starter mix, and there are NO roots sticking out thru the peat material, then, with the stem between your ring and middle fingers, turn it upside down; the plant, roots, dirt and all fall GENTLY out of the pot onto your open palm--like "voila"... and reverse the process onto your other hand (for inspection, to marvel at the root system, and to swat away the deerflies that have suddenly become interested in you at your most-critical moment since your birth!) to put it into the planting hole... a dangerous process perhaps, so practice if you think it'll work for you--otherwise i think that plant WILL become root-bound. on the other hand, if the roots are coming out through the peat pot, i would say plant it STILL IN THE POT and there ya go!
