Well, this is my first pumpkin question "Comment" with this group.. Currently I am a BeeFarmer and have been raising bees for awhile and thought I would try my hands at a pumpkin or two. A friend of mine had a 500+ pound pumpkin and gave me several seeds which I planted 3 of them using the ziplock method two of them are our and now in pots just waiting to get them in the Ohio soil. I have started a little contest at work by giving out the reamining seeds and had the last one auctioned off. The plan is to have a contest on who can grow the largest pumkin by October 25th.. The winner to get the auction prize. Currently the prize is somewhere between a batch of cookies and a free round of golf! I have read many articles and looked at pictures for clues and have concluded that I am more confused than I started. I saw pictures of male flowers being shipped in and good luck charms on top of pumpkins!

Well, I will continue for info and any assistance in helping me win the pumpkin fest is appreciated... of course if I can grow a pumpkin to 50 pounds I think I will be doing well! Thanks for letting me write my note.. and hope to reply how the pumpkin fest turns out!

You may want to pick up the Langevin book(s). There is a link in the "How To" section of this site. There a bunch of really good growers in your area so I'm sure you will get some guidance from them. Be warned, this hobby/sport is very addictive. What starts as a one time contest with friends may just turn into a lifetime obsession.

Try to resist the urge to put too many plants in too little space. I think most would agree that the minimum space required for one plant is 500-600 square feet (some like a lot more...some a little less). Don't keep those seedlings in the pots too long....They grow really fast and can get rootbound in a hurry. You also have a the Ohio Valley Pumpkin Growers Association up there and they are one of the best.
