I left for two days this weekend, so I gave my plants a watering with MiracleGro before I left that could tide them over until I got back (it wasn't much more than what I normally water with). When I got back home, I noticed my leaves look yellowish and one leaf was a tad brown around the edge. I have included pictures below.

What could have caused this? Over watering? Or are they "burnt" like they were over fertilized?

Looks like overwatering to me as well. You may want to sprinkle some epsom salt around the plants and then water it in in a few days when you do water again. Overwatering causes all of the magnesium in the soil to leach out, which in turn causes your plant to yellow. Overwatering will also leach the nitrogen from the soil. So, when you sprinkle the epsom salts, mix a high nitrogen content water soluable fertilizer, and uses that to water-in the epsom salts. You'll kill 2 birds with one stone.

My plants looked almost identical to yours a few days ago cause I over watered. So I waited a few days and then did exactly what I just described above, and now they look very good. It is very easy to over water when the plants are small at the beginning of the season.

David,

Thanks for your suggestion, I will try that and see what happens. I'll probably mix my MiracleGro Lawn Food to water the salt in (it's 36-6-6, so it's high in nitrogen). I'll try that in a few or more days.

I will try not to water my plants as much either, but with the rainy weather we've been having lately I'm not sure if my soil will get the chance to dry out, lol!

Yo Froggy,
They are not in peat pots in the ground are they? ....just a thought as that would keep the roots confined. peat pots should be taken off completley before putting them in the ground.

No, I didn't use peat pots this year. Aren't peat pots biodegradable though?

I sprinked about two teaspoons of epsom salt around the base of each plant and watered with some 36-6-6 around the plant's base. All of the epsom salt didn't dissolve, but I suspect that it will after a few more waterings.

Currenty some of the new growth coming in looks a little distorted/wrinkled and has traces of yellowing around the edges, but I'm hoping that it will straighten out later.

Hopefully I did this right!
