Since last year i made the mistake of waiting until I saw bugs, I figured I would mention it to all. If you havent gotten insecticides on your plants, at least get a bit on so the bugs just dont go hog wild.

TomMan, no bug problems here untill mid July, except for the neighborhood kids. I wonder if a good dose of Seven will git rid of them? NO we like kids, seriously I only use insecticides if I see insect/bacterial damage. (We are in the patch checking -things- out several times a day). Pumpkins hate chemicals almost as much as bugs...

Let me play devil's advocate: any amount of insecticide (whether preventative or defensive) plays a role in potential stress on the plant via absorbtion. Like anything growing these, the fine-line decisions make or break a potential weigh off trip.
Any thoughts on a step approach to insecticide application? i.e. dilution vs. full strength or spacing applications until enemy is at least in sight?

It only takes 1 cuke beetle to spell total devastation to your plants. If you wait till you see one, the damage may already be done. Most of us have too much time and money involved to see it all go in the crapper in 5-6 weeks.I spray according to directions once a week, and when those runners start taking off, I'll hit the new growth in the middle of the week. I had trouble getting my fruits to the 500# range(I blame cuke beetles), but with the use of systemics weekly, had a lot more luck last year.
