This morning, I found my Emmons 922.5 broken in half right at ground level. Since my plants are in hoop houses, it could not have been the wind. I suspect that it was the way the plant was growing as it was about to "lay over" in the usual way as vining begins. Well, this plant had grown straight up sort of like a stalk of corn...1.5" diameter main and large 18" leaves. Next time, I will support the plant at this critical stage!

I'll try to learn from your lesson. I've got one that's growing straight up as well. I will get it staked tomorrow.

Last year I had two main vines snap that would grow about a foot curling up and then snap, beware of gravity. David

I have a plant thats doing the same thing, but it's not too high up yet.I will wrap a shoelace around the base of the plant and anchor it to a coathanger tie 2 or 3 ft away, adding a little stress each day till it's well angled, stump and all,I should have a perfect touchdown in a week or so.John G..

My 922.5 is doing great, not getting tall and lanky at all. I believe this is because it went outside really quick. Who all is growing the 922.5? Mike

I have stratigically placed small pieces of styrofoam under my plants. they are damn near on the ground, and I am not taking any chances! Bummer about your 922.5 Stan I think that would have been a beauty!

I use bamboo sticks crossed under the falling main to "cradle" it as it falls. Each day I lower the sticks gently to lower the vine, by 4-5 days it is safely on the ground with no kinks. The main is normally rounded over instead of kinked. Hey G, I know you use this method also & you can explain things better than I, so chime in here & help me explain.........Paul
