uhh, there's been talk of removing every other secondary vine, alternating from side to side, like the foot-pegs on a power pole, and because of this, the plant may try to make up for its loss of leaf surface area by creating huge leaves... i plan to try this experimentally this year on at least one of my plants---i know that when i trimmed some vines on my 1140 plant last year, sure enough the very end leaf got bigger than the one or two before it...neat-o!
per one of the Joel Holland videos, like 99 or 01, Lincoln Mettler explains it sorta like i did....good luck to ya.....

In order to have very large leaves, one must give the plant everything it needs to grow maximally. That is why I had over a $1,000 fertilizer bill last year! At one month since starting, I have 20-22" leaves! I may not be able to grow a 1K pumpkin, but I do know how to have big leaves and healthy plants!

After the secondaries are removed,,do you treat the cuts the secondaries came off of with sulfur,,or let it heal naturally???Thanks...

doesn't nitrogen aid in the formation of large leafs?

Jeff, I have never treated any pruning wounds, and the plants have always healed themselves. If you are pruning more than 1 plant, though, rinse off your knife with some rubbing alcohol. This prevents spread of disease from one plant to another. In addition to pruning, it seems as though certain genetics seem to make for bigger leaves.Far north (Canada) seeds seem to always produce smaller leaves for me. Anyone else notice this?

The leaves will also bigger once the vince reaches the edge of your patch and you dead-head it. Dead-heading seems to make the leaves really get bigger too.
