Has anyone else had a seed from the previous year's rotted pumpkin spontaneously grow? For the first time ever, I have a plant growing at the inside edge of my hoop house. I believe that it is from the Holland 808.

Stan I normally have 2 or 3 wild plants come up from the year before. What surprized me this year It has been cool here except for the past 3 days and sure enough one has popped up yesterday. one wonders if one would let it go how big the fuit would get. Mark

Hey Stan before the cold streak hit we had a couple of 90 degree days. the whole garden was full of pumpkins. Seems my wife had thrown in last year store bought pumpkins that rotted and got buried in all th leaves and got turned in...There still some growing in the walkway aroungd the garden..wild

I've had those pop up before also. Do you ever notice that the "volunteers" that come up in the spring are hardy as Hell? We cover & baby our new seedlings & ignore the others. they get frost-bit, hailed on & blown over but refuse to die. I've had them pop up in the yard & I mow over them & they grow back......go figure??????

A few years ago when I was "pumpkin illiterate" I decided to let some of those volunteers grow along with my home started plants. As they grew, I thought they looked pretty good. Different, somehow, but heathty. So I nurtured them along and cared for them up to the point that they started setting fruit. They were spagetti squash that were thrown in the pumpkin patch for compost.

Everytime I go out to the field I have new volunteers popping up all over.
