its funny what lengths we go to to sprout a pumpkin..yesterday my wife conned me into cutting the yard, well while i was picking up the usual junk from the depths of the grass before mowing guess what.. right there in the middle of the yard where we had our last falls pumpkin display was the prettiest little pumpkin plant sprout youve ever seen coming up on its own.. from a seed left from a pumpkin that the bottom had rotted on. well i got my shovel and carefully transplanted it to the back yard next to the fence where i could take real good care of it..soon after my neighbor lured me over to his house with the promise of cold beer so i left the grass cutting up to my wife..after a few cold ones i staggered back home figuring my new plant might want a sip to help ease the move and yep you guessed it..mowed down!!!not even a leaf left..i just went back to my buddies house and had a few more..

Disaster strikes back - as to some other growers here. Time to keep all unauthorized personnel like wives, children out off these restricted pumpkin areas. They should be warned not to roll the dice. Enough sytemics, traps and guns are already stored for pest control - that could keep them out too!
My family had been warned early. Look, this is a pumpkin plant. Now it´s small and cute but will soon be giant and brutal. Grown-up plants eat cats and dogs. Don´t look. Don´t touch. Don´t even think about it or you cut the yard forever with cast iron balls on your feet.

blkcloud, you bring up a great point. I worked my ass off trying to get seeds to germinate, putting them under heated green houses and basically kissing their butts and still getting nipped by frost on the edges, Then out in the middle of the compost enriched patch is a volunteer seedling of unknown origion that is nicer than my pampered chosen ones! I wonder which is stronger? I think next season I will build my green houses in early april then plant a few of my chosen seeds with markers and just let momma nature take over.
