Jeff, It happened to one of my 2 plants last year. The plant never grew pumpkins of any size. The healthy one next to it grew beautiful pumpkins. These plants were side by side and in the same soil, which would eliminate soil deficiency or a virus (?).
My starter plant this year had 5 leaves on it and was showing signs of the same thing so I yanked it and started over last week.
I'm at a loss on what it could be. My latest theory is over watering.

Yo Jeff,
We get this one every year. There is nothing wrong with the plant...and I'll bet that you won't get anymore leaves on that plant like that again...but a few may appear on another plant.
