My 845 bobier germinated and is refusing to come up. So I checked it out. There is no main tap root just a root ball with a bunch of little roots coming off of it. Is this a seed I should trash and go to a back up or is this common and will not affect the growth of the plant and pumpkin? I'm afraid it's toast for the 845!!!! I NEED ADVICE, PLEASE

Ken,
Same problem here on a 914 Wentzell last week. Left it in the soil and watch it for a few days for observation under grow lights. The cotyledons never fully delveloped but the short fat stumpy root continued to grow more root hairs.
NO explaination to the cause of this. After asking around I have found that it has happened to other growers as well , but no explaination as to the cause.
I trashed it. I took a picutre of the freak seed and post it in the gallery.

Shellie and Ken,
Now I have some consolation that I am not the only grower
that has been facing germination challenges this spring.

Shell.....How are your hoop houses holding up in this wind?

I had the same problem last year, only with a different seed. I posted some pictures of it last year. The bottom line for me is that you should throw it out. I kept one of them last year, and it did finally start growing after about a month, and then I just culled it anyhow.

Don't feel bad Ken, I started two of the 845's and lost them both... Along with my 723. It happens! Jim

I thought the root ball was interesting, so I asked my father about it. He knew exactly what you were talking about. Any seedling that grows a rootball should be pulled and thrown out (in his opinion) he is VERY picky at this stage of growth. What he is looking for is a single tap root with side roots branching off of it.

I had the same dang thing happen to one of my 1167 Handy's! What a bummer, I still have it in a 8 inch pot but it is definatly a freak. I wonder if all these plants have a common genetic link?

Thanks all for the advice. It started coming up but the seed leaves are like fused together. It's toast. It now has a happy home in the garbage can!

hey you

Greencastle, PA

There is a genetic link, they all have 567.5 Mombert in their genetics. The 567 in the 845 and 723 is in the 865 Mettler, it was the pollenator.

I want to say thanks to Ray Waterman. I informed him of the problems with my 845,s and he is sending me out 3 other seeds(not 845). He didn't have to do this, so I commend him.
THANKS RAY,.....Kenny Blair

i guess i've been lucky----4 bobier 845 2000 seeds sprouted, 2 last year and 2 this year, and they've been just lovely----they look like little propellers when they
come up, and i'm soooo happy to see they're all right after these reports of freakism i'm hearin'--all from ray,
no problems.....good luck to y'all...

i am growing an 845...it took about 6 days to sprout...it is not really growing nearly as fast as my brown 1007..it looks healthy and all, but just not as beefy as the brown 1007...is this 845 usually a slow starter or am i doomed :(
