You can dig a pit so the bottom doesn't turn to mush. This is how i do it.THIS REALLY WORKS. I dig my pit 4' X 4' and 18" to 20" deep. Then I taper from the sides of the pit to the center of the pit. The center is about 6" to 8" lower than the sides. Then in the center i dig a hole about 12" wide by 2' down. In this hole i put crush stone. What you will have is like a FUNNEL. ( a funnel like what you use to pour some liquid into a small container. Then i put some straw over the crushed stone. Fill with manure and dirt. Don't pack the fill.
