Are they getting enough water? Those temperatures shouldn't cause any wilting.

High humidity would keep the moisture in the plant wouldn't it? I would say more than anything, down your way that it would be light intensity, causing heat on the plant surface. Tom Beachy

Humidity makes the air thicker,,makes it seem hotter...

The plants lose water through the leaves to cool off....if the air is supermoist, it doesn't accept the moisture from the leaves as readily as in a dry hot environment....the sun's intensity heats the leaves up and the atmoshere doesn't help in cooling it off,so it wilts. Every plant has a point of optimum intensity use...meaning in my jumbled Glennspeak, that the ag plant doesn't need the intensity of georgia sunlight...it wont grow any better past that optimum point....but it may create problems with burning and wilting. Shadecloth my man...shadecloth.I've used 50% shadecloth here on LI and in back to back plants saw no difference between 50%and full sun in growth, except that its better to work under the shade and it wilted less.....G

A question then G,,,if shade cloth is ok,,why isnt it ok to grow in the shade?

Because you still get 50% sun through 50%shade cloth.Thats all the plant needs here...intensity-wise....you know those hazy days when you cannot see the sun but burn to a crisp at the beach?....those are the biggest growth days in my patch.......G

Same thing is happening here Jeff. Not a bad wilt but enough to be concerned. My 625.4, 455.4 and 441 are doing great though. Main vine on the first two are over a foot long and laying down. I think I'll go G's route with the shadecloth over a couple and compare. Good luck!!!

Yo Jeff, Do your plants have good root systems? If not then they cannot take up enough water to keep the leaves from wilting. I've had plants in a greenhouse at 100 degrees that have not wilted..but they have had a good root system..and others outside at 80 degrees that have wilted..and they had small root systems.

Air movement outside would also cause wilting to some degree. Might be another factor in Alun's greenhouse plant at 100 degrees and not wilting....Tom
Alun, I thought you used the metric system (Celcius)? lol

It seems like the younger plants wilt more then older plants. I guess the leaves of the younger plants outgrow the capability of the root system to supply water to the plant but as the season progresses the roots catch up. My 2 cents worth.

Glen, Does that mean your whole patch is covered in shade cloth or just over the pumpkin?

Yo Tom, I like to keep to the old measurements...to hell with European intervention....and Brian...I agree with your 2 cents worth.

Alun, How old(large) was the plant(s) that you had in the greenhouse?
Sounds ideal if the greenhouse would be about 500 - 1000 sq ft. Would not have a problem with bugs and critters. Better control of moisture, Humidity and temp. I guess I can dream.....Tom
