Instead of building a shade structure couldn't I just put a tarp over the pumpkin and weight it down so it will not blow away. I am also thinking about polinating my pumpkins with muliple males from the same plant that it is growing on. Will this produce larger fruit or more seeds?

the shade structure is much easier. Plus you dont want to suffocate the fruit. Your pumpkin will only have a certain amount of seeds, 2 males is usually good enough to pollinate almost all of them. Tom Beachy

I know heavy hitters that put blankets on their fruit- and they have a shade structure too- to keep the blanket dry. Shade structures are easy to build... make a mini hoop house. covering your fruit with a blanket or shade structure can affect it color ! right scott ?! :)
