Ive heard alot of stuff on how deep the hole should be and what you should put in it. I think I will just put a small amount of osmocote 14-14-14 in a 3 ft deep hole by 3 ft wide. David

I am going to experiment under one of my plants with a mixture of soil, bagged manure.my compost, fresh grass clippings(when the grass grows)and maple leaves. All of the ingredients will be aprox even amounts in a 2.5 ft deep by 3ft wide hole mixed. As the organic matter breaks down I hope it warms the soil early in the year then feeds the plant as it breaksdown more later in the summer.

I have a 2x3x3 planting hole prepared for my best plant with compost, composted cow manure, and hay in it. I have a 3x3x2 hole for another plant, and am still working on one for my second best plant. One of my spots has very lose soil and I haven't prepared a planting hole in that one. Each of the planting holes was surrounded with a ring of grass clippings to raise the N a little bit when the plants are needing it the most for vegetive growth. instead of planting in the center of a hill, I will plant in the center of a pit (with the planting hole in the center) this way any rain water flows straight to the stump of the plant. Tom your plant needs air, that is the purpose of the hill. To provide warmth and air.The roots will find the water. Building a pit will drown you plant.

Shannon, I built the pit because Maryland gets very little rain, last year the use of automatic sprinlers was banned and if they were used you would be fined, so the more water I can get to the plant the better. it also gets very hot here and I don't want any extra warmth in the soil because my plants had really bad heat stress last year. I put hay in so the plants would get air, it is a very good airator, so I don't think that will be too big of a problem. Tom
