Hi Everyone,
Please check the photos in our diary of a weed that is growing on the planting mound in our patch. We could use your help identifying it and getting rid of it.
Thanks much,

I saw weeds similiar to those in my patch last year. I do not know what they are but I have not seen them yet this year. I guess the cold wether must have killed them.

Your picture helps, but I need to know a few more details. My guess is that it's common chickweed. Are the leaves opposite each other, with kind of square stems with a single row of hairs? Leaf surface is smooth with no hairs, also are the flowers 5 petaled? If not, email me with more details, I also had a similar weed, that was actually cannola which came in on my mushroom compost. Chickweed is a winter annual, but can grow and flower at anytime. Hope this helps!

Yo riverview, It looks like chickweed. I get it with my manure all the time. Use it here as a green manure..just turn it in before it flowers or hoe it....does not come back if you get rid before it goes to seed.

I would check the mouse eared chickweed, it is very common and very easy to control. It's generally considered a winter annual and like Alun suggested, turning it over in the spring will usually go along way to controlling it. good luck!

Hello everyone, much thanks to everyone that replied to our weed question. After looking at the pictures we agree that it is in fact chickweed. After doing some research we have found that it isn't as bad as we thought. Chickweed is largely known for it's medicinal qualities and was actually named after being a favorite winter food amoung various birds including chickens. RVSK
