Any advice on avoiding splits? Last year, my first year growing, I had a pumpkin at 280 ott but it split on 8-20. My other pumpkin plant was too shaded to get past 100 lbs so I ended up with nothing for the weighoff.

Joel Holland warned me about allowing the pumpkin to grow too fast. He cautioned me to not over water late in the season or when trying to "force" growth on your fruit. Too much water followed by a "hot spell" frequently spells disaster up here in the Pacific Northwest.

Don't give it to much nitrogen in a short period of time! I blew up a real beauty two years ago in late July trying to force it into "giveing up just a little more".
